Charles Reuben Euridge
Birth Date: 1887
Death Date: 4 Mar 1917
Service Branch: Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment)
Service Number: 50296
Story:

Charles Reuben EURIDGE was born in 1887 at Tottenham, Middlesex.  He was the fourth son of John William and Mary Jane EURIDGE née HARE. He had seven brothers and sisters:

  1. Charlotte Annie EURIDGE (1878-1936)
  2. William Harry EURIDGE  (16 Mar 1880- 25 Dec 1949)
  3. Thomas James EURIDGE  (1881-1882)
  4. Lizzie Louisa EURIDGE  (13 Jan 1883-1971)
  5. Flora Jane EURIDGE  (11 Oct 1884)
  6. Ernest Edwin EURIDGE (1886-1886)
  7. Alfred Victor EURIDGE (1889-1890)

In 1888-89 the family moved from London to Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire, famous for its brewing. His father John was a Brewery Foreman at one of the many breweries, having previously worked at a brewery in Tottenham, and Stoke Newington. Unfortunately, his father John died of cancer on 9 February 1892 at 25 Edward Street, Horninglow, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, at the age of 48.

In the censuses of 1891, and 1901, he was living at 25 Edward Street, Burton upon Trent, together with his mother, and brother and sisters.

In 1909, he married Bertha YEOMANS in the Burton upon Trent registration district. They had three children:

  1. Wilfred Charles EURIDGE (1910-1965)
  2. Kathleen EURIDGE  (19 Dec 1911- Mar 1985)
  3. Nellie EURIDGE  (9 June 1915- Feb 1990)

Prior to World War 1, he was a Cooper at the Bass Brewery.

He enlisted as Private 50296 in the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment). He was killed fighting in France, on 4 March 1917, at the age of 29, having never seen his youngest child Nellie.

He is buried in Plot V.B.46, Vermelles British Cemetery, Vermelles, Pas de Calais, France. On 1 June 2000, I visited his grave and was deeply moved. He is also listed on the memorial roll in Lichfield Cathedral.

He was my great-uncle, and very little was known about him. Fortunately, I now have an undated photograph of him taken together with his mother, brothers and sisters. This can be seen on the Euridge, Uridge One-Name Study website, on webpage http://www.uridge.org/Photographs/Euridge_Family.jpg.

His full narrative, together with sources and citations is available on http://www.uridge.org/Euridge_Uridge-p/p3.htm#i62.
