Joseph was born Edward Joseph in 1893 at Therfield, Hertfordshire to William and Ann (or Annie) Jane (nee Hale).  Both in the 1901 and 1911 census he was shown as just Joseph Hagger and by 1911, when he was shown as a Farm Labourer his father was a widow but still shown as married in the census return.    William and Ann had 11 children in all.  We can trace Josephs family back to his Great Great Grandparents Edward (born 1763 Therfield) and Sarah Nee Reynolds.
