Storing data

There are many systems that can be used for storing data. Some people keep all their research notes and family tree information on paper and manage quite happily. But especially nowadays it is much more common to use a computer, and this can do much to make running your ONS easier.

If you do decide to use a computer, it is difficult to recommend specific software. There are several types of program that you might use – word processors, spreadsheets, databases, family tree programs and special genealogy software. Each has advantages and drawbacks. The choice will depend on your circumstances, the way you carry out your research, the information you hold, and the form in which you want to produce output.
