Guild Wiki

What is the Guild Wiki?

The Guild Wiki brings together the knowledge and experience of Guild members to help everyone get more from their one-name studies. It is a collaborative resource that members can add to and improve. If you have useful information, experience or advice to share, you can edit an existing page or contribute new material.

How is the Wiki organised?

The Wiki is organised around the Guild publication Seven Pillars of Wisdom: The Art of One-Name Studies, together with a number of additional subject areas. You can explore topics including:

  • The Seven Pillars of Wisdom
  • DNA
  • Countries
  • Surnames
  • Maps
  • Education and Learning
  • Software and Technology

The Wiki continues to grow as Guild members add their knowledge and experience, so new topics and sections may be added over time.

How can I contribute to the Wiki?

Before making your first contribution, it is a good idea to browse a few existing pages to become familiar with the way information is presented. A Style Guide for the Wiki is currently in development.

When you have something to add or update, open the relevant Wiki page and select Edit at the top of the page. Make your changes and select Update to save them. Don’t worry about making a mistake. Previous versions of Wiki pages are retained, so changes can be corrected or an earlier version restored.

If you would like to practise before editing a live page, try the Wiki Sandbox.

Copyright and contributions

Please do not add material to the Wiki unless you have the right to use it. This includes text, photographs, illustrations and other material that may be protected by copyright.

By contributing your own material to the Wiki, you give the Guild permission to publish, edit and retain it as part of the Guild website. You remain free to use your own material elsewhere.

History

The Guild Wiki was set up in 2006 as an experimental Wiki. It was originally known as the Guild Knowledge Store. The concept was introduced by the then Chairman Peter Walker in the April-June 2006 issue of JOONS in an article on Blogs, wikis and RSS – what’s it all about. The Wiki has since expanded into a valuable resource for Guild members. The Wiki pages were migrated from the old Wiki to this new media-rich WordPress platform by a team of volunteers in 2016, and migrated again to BetterDocs in 2026.
