What is the Guild Wiki?

The Guild Wiki is a cooperative project that summarises the experience and knowledge of our membership. Any member can add to and alter the content within its pages, so it is best described as a way of constructing web pages in a collaborative manner, online, in real time, without having to know how to write HTML or any special Wiki language. Any Guild member can add to or edit the work done to date.

How do I contribute to the Wiki?

As with the Guild WebForum, it is probably best to lurk a bit first before contributing. A Style Guide for the Wiki is currently in development. When you feel you have something to contribute to a page, browse to it using the button above, then click the Edit tab at the top of the page to open the editor, make your changes and press Update. It’s that simple. Remember, though, that after editing the page everyone will see the version you saved. If you do make an unintentional mistake simply re-edit it or revert to a previous version of the page. The Wiki preserves the entire edit history of each page so nothing is ever lost. If you want to experiment have a play around in the Sandbox.

How is the Wiki organised?

The Wiki is organised around the Guild publication Seven Pillars of Wisdom: The Art of One-Name Studies. There are several other relevant sections such as DNA, Countries, Surnames, Maps, Education and Learning, and Software and Technology. Other sections may be added over time.

The legal bit

Do not submit anything to the Wiki which is copyrighted by other parties. Any material that you submit becomes part of the Guild website and is copyright of the Guild, although you are free to re-use your submitted material for any other purpose.

History

The Guild Wiki was set up in 2006 as an experimental Wiki. It was originally known as the Guild Knowledge Store. The concept was introduced by the then Chairman Peter Walker in the April-June 2006 issue of JOONS in an article on Blogs, wikis and RSS – what’s it all about. The Wiki has since expanded into a valuable resource for Guild members. The Wiki pages were migrated from the old Wiki to this new media-rich WordPress platform by a team of volunteers in 2016, and migrated again to BetterDocs in 2026.
