Topographic names “Surnames in this category were more common in the south-east counties of England than in any other region. Sussex especially had a large and varied collection of topographical names.” (McKinley HBS p73) The north of England, save for Lancashire, had relatively few names of this type. Ditto Wales and the Gaelic-speaking parts of Scotland. Most topographical names originated between 1150 to 1350.
