Being one of a family of eight children in a very deprived area of London, his early life was far from easy and the fact that his father was rather too fond of drink did not exactly help matters. He was the son of Leonard Henry and Fanny Elizabeth LAST (nee Piggott) and he was born in 1893 in New South Wales in Australia. He had one sister. He is buried in the Delville Wood Cemetery in Longueval in France.
