1886 John Edward Ashley, was born and raised in Barry, Glamorganshire, Wales, the son of Gracious Ashley and Mary Ann [ nee Powell]. He is thought to have first served with the Hussars, service no. 23380, but there is no further information about this. Henry’s parents were Henry Percy and Eliza Greathead née Hunt both born in England.  They married on 3 March 1889 and in April they set off on the Steam Ship Lusitania in April 1889 on an unassisted passage arriving in Sydney on 4 May 1889 to set up home in Australia. 1869 Albert Allen Ashley, b. Aston Abbots, Buckinghamshire, the son of William Humphrey Ashley, livery servant, and Maria [nee Moore].
